Busted! Vanity Editing On Wikipedia Not Allowed

Published by Joana under Media, People, World News

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - A Dutch royal couple acknowledges altering a Wikipedia entry about a 2003 scandal that forced the prince to renounce his claim to the throne.

Prince Johan Friso, son of the reigning Queen Beatrix, and Princess Mabel of Oranje-Nassau are the latest to be embarrassed in a spate of discoveries of vanity changes to Wikipedia entries. Such self-serving amendments are frowned upon in the Web encyclopedia that “anyone can edit.”

(Full Article)

To be fair though, a lot of information on Wikipedia is incorrect or should never have been publicized. I’ve been rather shocked and disgusted at the number of articles that have popped up people with detailed information in regards to their private lives and contact information. What right does Wiki have to publicize that? Wikipedia claims that the information is garnered from the information provided to WHOIS, but really, if someone is doing a WHOIS search then they have a purpose to seek that information. Flaunting that information about and posting it will-nilly for no other purpose than to pad your pages and entice people to misuse that information is wrong. Last I heard, taking the WHOIS information and publishing on other sites was not allowed and unethical.

So the Dutch Royals sought to edit what they felt was incorrect? Hell, they won’t be the first.

There’s One Journalist Who Gets It

Published by Joana under Crime, Entertainment, Media, People

I’m glad to see there is at least one jounralist, and most probably a ton more, who feel the exact same way that I do:

NEW YORK — A lighter and paper shredder helped make Mika Brzezinski the symbol of television journalism’s guilt trip about Paris Hilton.

Brzezinski used both to destroy a script calling for her to read about Hilton’s release from jail on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program recently. Part serious, part an act, it has become an Internet sensation. More than 2 million people have watched a clip of the incident, around 10 times the number who watched it live on TV.

Apparently, she’s not the only one sick of the socialite.

(Full Article)

Nope, Brzezinski is not the only one tired of hearing about Hilton, in fact I pledged not to post anything further on this…woman..but this deserved recognition. Mika Brzezinski I applaud you.

“Among journalists it touched a nerve because I think we’re tired of pretending this is important,” she said. “We also know that, deep down inside, our viewers know that we don’t believe this is news. They can’t. They can’t think we’re that dumb.” […]

You don’t need to have any fancy-smancy entertainment system or home furniture to enjoy this great moment in broadcasting history. Just grab some snacks and lean back in your computer chair, the entertainment is about to start:

Captain America Assassinated

Published by Joana under Entertainment, Media

Unlike the infamous The Death of Superman issue that DC released years back this superhero really does bite the dust and stays dead. If that’s not enough to sadden and shock the comic fans then how about we throw in some metaphors and parallels to our present day government:

It’s a funeral fit for a superhero.

In the drizzling rain at Arlington National Cemetery, thousands of grieving patriots solemnly watch as the pallbearers — Iron Man, the Black Panther, Ben Grimm and Ms. Marvel — carry a casket draped with an American flag.

Yes, folks, Captain America is dead and buried in the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ “Fallen Son,” due on newsstands the morning after Independence Day. After 66 years of battling villains from Adolf Hitler to the Red Skull, the red, white and blue leader of the Avengers was felled by an assassin’s bullet on the steps of a New York federal courthouse.

He was headed to court after refusing to sign the government’s Superhero Registration Act, a move that would have revealed his true identity. A sniper who fired from a rooftop was captured as police and Captain America’s military escort were left to cope with chaos in the streets.

But the sniper didn’t act alone, and didn’t even fire the shot that killed the captain.

Writer Jeph Loeb has been busy working through the stages of grief in his most recent titles. A book centered on Wolverine dealt with denial; one with the Avengers covered anger; and Spider-Man battled depression.

With the story line so relevant to present-day politics, and the timing of the latest issue so precise, it’s hard not to think the whole thing is one big slam on the government.

“Part of it grew out of the fact that we are a country that’s at war, we are being perceived differently in the world,” Loeb said. “He wears the flag and he is assassinated — it’s impossible not to have it at least be a metaphor for the complications of present day.”

Buh-Bye Sanjaya!

Published by Joana under Entertainment, Media

sanjaya.jpgWell I am sure there are a lot of red and puffy eyes today. It would appear that Sanjaya Malakar has at long last been voted off of American Idol.

Terribly tragic news that isn’t it?

Well while he might not have much talent for singing, and many wondered how he even made as far as he did, there is one tragedy in this. AI can expect its ratings for this season to drop now. After all, didn’t everyone tune in this season to see when Sanjaya would be voted off? Didn’t everyone tune in to see Antonella Barba and compare her to the numerous pictures of her online? Now that they’re gone, well, where’s the drama for this season? What is there to draw in the crowd? There’s nothing.

So now maybe I can finally stop seeing my headline news riddled with AI updates. Pft, the competition is over and the drama is at last finito.
